This Wednesday the Pack is meeting at the Sheridan Park Fire Hall, 744 Sheridan Drive starting at 6pm. Wear your Class B Uniforms (Gold T-shirts). Parking will be tricky, so plan on using nearby side-streets (Desmond, Mapleview, Elmview or even Sheridan Park).

We’ll meet at Beaver Island in the Main Parking Lot (Lot 1) at 8:30 for coffee, juice and Timbits. Cub scouts and parents will sign in at shelter 1B at 9 AM

Lunch will be provided by Legacy 11 – hot dogs are on the menu

Families will need to bring shovels and hard rakes

Cubs should wear old clothes and have proper footwear, rain gear, work gloves and water bottles to have with them while working. Water will be available there.

Groups will be 6 to 8 cubs and their parents. We will be planting trees and shrubs. The holes for the trees will be pre-dug and trees will be next to holes.

Adults will help put the trees in the holes. Cubs will back fill the hole and prepare the trees -wrap, stake, water, and mulch.

During the instructions for the tree preparation the boys will learn about trees. For example, why the species of trees are selected, what is the purpose of the wrap, why would the trees need to be staked, etc. Check your Cub Scout Handbook to see if any badge requirements will be fulfilled.

Each family needs to fill out a NYS Parks volunteer service agreement. They’ll be available at our meetings and also at the event.

The Park people will have other planting activities as a “plan b” in case there would be more time available after the tree planting program.

Siblings are welcome, but won’t get a t-shirt and will not have lunch provided. Each child must be entered on the NYS Parks volunteer service agreement.

This is a work day! We’ll take rest breaks as needed, but we won’t have time to play in the park. Families are welcome to stay after the event and play or picnic.

We’ll be touring the Lockport Cave on Saturday, July 9th. Meet at the cave at 10am for a 70-minute guided tour through America’s past. You will explore the historic Erie Canal Locks 67-71, constructed in 1838. You will also view ruins from an earlier industrial age, walk safely through a water tunnel that was blasted out of solid rock in the 1850s, viewing stalactites, flow stone, various geological formations and artifacts left behind by the men who built the tunnel in the early days of the Erie Canal. If you are lucky you may even find a fossil or two.

Cost is $5.50 per person; Scouts are paid for by the Pack.

Take the 290 → 990 → the end. Make a left on Millersport, after 3 miles left on Transit. After 6 miles on Transit you’ll be in Lockport. Cross over the canal & then right on Main St. This will take you over the canal again, then make the 2nd left onto Pine St.

• Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride tours take approximately 70 minutes.
• We recommend comfortable walking shoes.
• Cave temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit, wind breakers or sweatshirts are recommended for your tour.

After the cave, we’ll be driving to Royalton Ravine County Park in Gasport, NY (a 15-minute drive from the cave). After finishing lunch (bring a bag lunch!), we’ll hike back into the woods, then enter the ravine for our creek hike.

If you’re just coming for the creek hike, we’ll be leaving our cars & heading out onto the trails between 12:30 and 1:00pm.

You will find a wooden suspension footbridge, a waterfall and historic homestead ruins as you travel along the trails as well as many varieties of flora and fauna.

This is a creek hike – you will get wet. There are restrooms there, if you’d like to change before we head out. Swimming trunks may not be a bad idea – they dry quickly. You must have something on your feet: old sneakers, sandals (no flip-flops), crocs, water shoes.

Mr. Clint and Mr. Eric are going this weekend to finalize our path & make sure it’s safe for the Scouts. Any change of plans will be announced when we return.

Our 2011 Spring Round-Up is this Wednesday, May 18th, at 6:30pm at the St. Paul’s Parish Center (former school). All boys in grades K-4 are welcome to join us that night to learn what Cub Scouts is all about.

We’ll have a gathering activity, then our regular opening ceremony. Afterwards, boys will meet in dens, according to grade

• Tigers K & 1st grade
• Wolves 2nd grade
• Bears 3rd grade
• Webelos 4th grade

While the boys are meeting, parents will be given information about Cub Scouts & Pack 529 (what the time commitments are, costs, activities, etc).

You may fill out an application that night, or take one home with you and think about it.

There’s no commitment necessary if you show up – we just want to show you and your son what Cub Scouting is!

The Buffalo-Niagara Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America have asked us to collect items for military care packages. The list of suggested items can be found here.

Please bring 1 item to the Blue & Gold dinner. We have 2 pillow cases we’d like to fill that night. If you wish to bring more than one item, you’re welcome to, but we’re just asking for one.
